Introducing Growth Groups

Grace is a big place and getting bigger. It’s easy
to get lost in the crowd. We all want the benefits
of a large church, but we all need the experience
of a small church. . . . a place where we can know
and be known by others, a place where we can
live the Gospel together.

The Pastoral Staff and Elders at Grace have
recognized the important need to both assimilate
and shepherd the many that God is bringing to our
church in these exciting days. Our vision at Grace
is to see lives, families, our community and the
world transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We believe that Gospel transformation happens in
the context of small groups where real relationships can be experienced and deepened.

In Fall 2004, Grace launched a brand new ministry
of small groups we call Growth Groups. Our
desire is to see Growth Groups become the “front
line” for care, prayer and Bible Study here at
Grace. Our long range goal is to see the great
majority of those who attend Grace involved in a
Growth Group by the end of the year 2007. So
rearrange your life, make time in your schedule,
and jump into a Growth Group!

What Are Growth Groups?

Growth Groups are closed groups of 6 to 12
people who meet regularly for prayer, care and
Bible study.

• Growth Groups are a sermon based “lecture-lab”
model that provide the opportunity to not just
hear a sermon, but also grapple, study, discuss
and apply God’s Word in the context of honest
and open relationships.
• Growth Groups are a great way for new folks and
long time attenders to enter deeper into “Life at
Grace” by providing an opportunity to move
beyond Sunday morning chit-chat.
• Growth Groups help make a large church feel like
a small church by providing smaller settings
where the Biblical “one anothers” are practiced
and experienced.
• Growth Groups are settings where timeless
Biblical truth is internalized through the shared
practice of prescribed Biblical functions in the
context of real Biblical community.
• Growth Groups are the “front line” for care and
shepherding at Grace.

Why "Sermon-Based" Growth Groups?

1. It’s a model that maximizes learning
and application by taking into account
different learning styles. Learning dramatically
increases when people are given the
opportunity to hear, take notes and discuss.
2. It’s a model that unifies the congregation
as multiple groups study, learn and apply the
same material together and grow in the same
direction at the same time.
3. It’s a model that’s flexible in that it allows
different leaders to springboard off of the
sermon material in their own individual ways.
4. It’s a model that’s scalable by allowing the
creation of new groups on a continuous basis
as the church grows.
5. It’s a Biblical model. Jesus Himself taught in
large group settings and then discussed
His sermon in small group settings. (Mt. 13)
